The director general of the National Farmers Union (NFU) Richard MacDonald handed over a £205,000 cheque to the FARM-Africa chairperson Martin Evans at the last night’s farmers' weekly awards dinner. Speaking to more than 1,000 guests both Mr MacDonald thanked all those who participated in raising the sum to the Africa 100 Appeal which helps East African farmers improve their productivity.
The amount raised represents more than a year's fundraising that encompassed many events such as a London to Paris cycle ride, a charity golf day and donations across the industry.
"Cassava is a staple crop in East Africa but productivity has been badly affected since the 1980s by a virus. Our project will offer farmers a new variety of Cassava which is resistant to disease, highly productive and able to withstand periods of drought. This money will achieve food security for thousands of people in Kenya. It will also enable farming families to earn a small income for medical and educational costs.
