According to a survey by Dairy Co Farmer Intentions restoring confidence is the key factor in securing the future of British milk production. The report contains warnings about the low levels of farmers planning to expand or invest in their farms and this will lead to a further decline in British milk production. However it also provides clear signs that some farmers are cautiously optimistic on the future of British dairying and highlights the role that succession planning and that the younger generation have to play in ensuring a viable future dairy industry.

"These findings are alarming, but allow us to assess the general feeling of our dairy farmers, and prioritise our work accordingly. The case for acting on the recommendations made in the NFU's Survival Plan for British Dairying - which called for improved milk contracts and better communication - is absolutely clear. Anybody connected to the milk industry has the ability to increase farmer confidence." NFU Dairy Board Chairman Gwynn Jones.
