Department store chain Marks & Spencer (M&S) have announced its plans to clearly label the source of its dairy produce. They will be the first major retail chain in the UK to do so, the move follows from extensive lobbying by the National Farmers Union (NFU) that consumers should know the origin of their food and drink.
British dairy farmers have complained that they are being undermined by cheaper overseas imports of cheese and other dairy products while consumers are being mislead and confused by labelling.
M&S already displays country of origin labels on fresh fish and meat but they will start relabeling its own brand dairy products from January. The labels will not only state where the product was made but also its point of origin. |
