Horticulture board chairperson Sarah Pettit speaking yesterday at the National Farmers Unions (NFU) council reported volatility in both prices and dry conditions in eastern areas. This has caused difficulties for potato and brassica growers.
Ms Pettit felt all suppliers would benefit if the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills appointed a supermarket ombudsman by November. Regarding crop protection Ms Pettit reported on the HortLINK funding proposal for a project to seek alternatives to the crop protection products due to be lost as a result of future regulatory changes.
"The industry has taken the lead by forming a platform for commercial horticultural research organisations to come together and look at research delivery on farm.” Horticulture Board Chairperson Sarah Pettit. |
