Secretary of State, Hilary Benn has indicated that initial sequencing of the Surrey foot and mouth disease virus shows it to be type 01 BFS. As a result of this find it is likely that this is the same strain as August foot and mouth outbreak. Hilary Benn said they would not be able to confirm the full virus strain until all sequencing has been completed but there is widespread speculation that the virus may have stemmed from the nearby Pirbright scientific research centre, a mere ten miles away. This investigation is currently in progress. They do not have a fixed timetable for these results and the public will be informed about any updates.
